Here, Olaf faced the aged ealdorman Byrhtnoth of Essex in one of the defining battles of the era. What followed was years of renewed Viking raids across England. King Aethelred refused to pick up a sword and lead the defense of his country. For the English churchmen of the time, this was the apocalypse as foretold in the Book of Revelation.
