PAs, who aren't doctors or nurses, are increasingly handling tasks similar to both, raising questions about their exact role and qualifications. According to the Royal College of Physicians, PAs are Medical Associate Professionals (MAPs) assisting in hospitals and GP practices with routine medical tasks, allowing doctors to focus on more complex cases. Despite their growing presence, there's significant variation in their duties across different hospitals. I'll also touch on other similar roles such as Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), Advanced Nursing Practitioners (ANPs), and Anesthesia Associates (AAs), though I'll refer to all as Physician Associates for simplicity. The PA role originated in the US in the 1960s and was introduced to the UK in 2003. Despite some resistance, the title changed from Physician Assistant to Physician Associate in 2012. PAs typically hold a two-year master's degree and can perform a variety of medical tasks, though they can't prescribe medication or request certain diagnostic tests like X-rays. I explore why PA numbers are rising, often replacing doctors due to shorter training times and lower costs. However, this trend has caused frustration among junior doctors and GPs, as PAs compete for training opportunities and jobs. Additionally, concerns about patient safety arise when PAs are used inappropriately or without proper supervision, as evidenced by several alarming incidents. From 2024, the General Medical Council (GMC) will regulate PAs, aiming to ensure proper training and standards. This regulation aims to address some of the existing concerns and provide clearer oversight.
