Here’s a test. Switch on an audio recorder when you’re with a friend. Ask your pal to ask you a really random question. “What did you think of the film last night?” “ Why did you choose that car you bought?” They can ask anything at all, but something you couldn’t have prepared for. After your reply, play it back and transcribe the answer, in other words, write it out word for word. Then start the recorder again and this time you need to read your actual words again, but this time from the script. Now, you’ll have two recordings…firstly ad-libbed reply, then you READING your reply. You’ll have no excuse over any script not written in your voice style now, will you…the words WERE your own! So notice the differences between the two recordings? The main differences will be those of imperfections in the first recording, that that’s good! Humans are imperfect; we have characters, we have personalities, we have moods and emotions, and we have breaths!! These AI enhanced text to speech computer programs that are supposed to take over the jobs of us voiceovers can’t do what we do, and computers will never be as good as us humans, certainly not in our lifetimes. The computer voice is TOO perfect. Now, to sound “natural” when reading a script I’m not suggesting that you stumble all over it and leave gaps and breathe in the wrong place and so on, but a small but important amount of intelligent imperfection added to your performance will vastly improve the sound of it to the target audience. And what I’ve just said, “the Target Audience” is key to all of this. The “imperfections” have to come from understanding who the script is meant for. You need to get inside the head of the target audience – whether they are academics, buyers of goods, kids, hobbyists, whatever….know the kind of people you’re talking to and a natural empathy should grow between your voice and them. You’ll discover as you “tune in” to your audience, that certain words will glow a little bit more than others, you’ll find some words you’ll naturally emphasise, some sections you’ll find yourself smiling as you speak, while you become naturally serious in other parts. If you’re allowed to change the script, to colloquialise it more, with contractions, then do it. For example you would change “you would change” in the script to “you’d change” and so on…..
