Patrol boat encountering a giant tsunami off the coast of Fukushima prefecture (Footage provided by Japan Coast Guard) The Japanese text is followed by an English translation. 地震発生から約1時間後、福島県・相馬市沖で海上保安庁の巡視船が遭遇した津波の映像(船上から撮影)。 午後3時45分すぎ、宮城海上保安部の巡視船「まつしま」(名称当時)は、相馬市沖・約5Kmの地点を、沖合に向かって航行していた。 3.3マイル(約5.3km)前方の海面には、水平線を覆うように、視界の左右いっぱいに長い筋を引いた黒濁状の高波が、目視で確認できる。 進行方向左側・遠方の高波は、一部が白波を立てており、波の威力を物語る。 進路の右遠方を航行する他の船が、その高波を乗り越える様子を遠目で確認しながら、船員たちは、波高が10メートルにもなることを予測した。 船の速度は、11ノット(約16km/h)、高波との距離がじわじわと縮まってくる。 「両舷前進10度!」...高波に対し、船を垂直に操舵するよう、指示・応答の声が飛び、撮影者も、波が船を直撃した時の衝撃や振動に備え、カメラをしっかり固定して構えるよう指示を受ける。 いよいよ波が、9ケーブル(0.9海里 = 約1,700メートル)まで迫ってきた時、船内の緊迫感はさらに高まり、「来るぞ! 総員、何かにつかまれ!!」、「しっかり自分(の態勢)を保持しろ!」...さまざまな叫び声が、矢継早に飛び交った。 映像開始から約4分半後、ついに船は、第1波とクロスし、船窓ごしの光景は、大きな山を越え、そして次の瞬間、一気に急降下するがごとく、急激に変動した。 船員たちも、言葉にならない驚がくのうめき声を漏らす。 「越えた!」と安堵(あんど)の声が響いたのもつかの間、前方には、さらに、続いて船に迫る高波が見えた。 船長とおぼしき声が、船のスピートをアップし、さらに沖に進むよう指示を出す。 緊張が極度に高まったまま、船はさらに、第2波、第3波と続く脅威を迎えた...。 Footage: Tsunami encountered by the Japan Coast Guard’s patrol boat off the coast of Soma city in Fukushima prefecture about an hour after the earthquake occurred.
