A 1000-Year-Old Chinese Breakfast! Easy Homemade Youtiao (No Yeast Needed) Chinese Fried Dough — Youtiao (油条) is one of the most traditional Chinese breakfast foods. It’s crispy, light, and slightly salty, often served with soy milk, congee, or rice porridge. This classic breakfast has a history of nearly a thousand years, dating back to the Song Dynasty. Even today, you’ll find it everywhere — from early morning street stalls to modern cafés. Ingredients: 500g All-purpose flour 5g Salt 12g White sugar 5g Baking powder 3g Baking soda 135ml Water 135ml Milk 1 Egg 42g Unsalted butter (melted) 900–1000ml Cooking oil (for frying) Instructions: 1. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda. Mix well. 2. In another bowl, mix water, milk, and egg. 3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until a rough dough forms. 4. Melt the butter in the microwave for 20–30 seconds, then add it to the dough. 5.Knead until smooth, then press and fold the dough. 6. Cover and rest for 15 minutes. 7. Press and fold again, cover, and rest for another 15 minutes. 8. Repeat once more, then divide the dough in half. 9. Press, fold, and shape each piece into a log. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap. 10. Let rest 4–5 hours at room temperature. 11. Unwrap and stretch the dough gently. 12. Dust with flour and roll flat with a rolling pin. Shape the edges neatly. 13. Cut into 1.5 cm strips. 14. Dip a bamboo skewer in water and draw a line on one strip; place another strip on top and press the ends. 15. Use the skewer to press a line down the center. Repeat with all pieces. 16. Heat cooking oil over medium heat (test with a wooden chopstick—bubbles mean it’s ready). 17. Gently stretch each piece and place it into the oil. 18. Flip continuously using chopsticks until golden and puffed. 19. Fry remaining pieces and the dough ends. 20. Drain on a rack or paper towel. ✨ Result: Golden, crispy outside with a soft and airy inside — just like the ones from Chinese breakfast stalls!
