Video Description
The cities of Afghanistan are some of the most isolated on the planet. Drivers here negotiate age-old vehicles and routes which barely cut between the mountains and ravines, reaching altitudes of 4000 metres. surmount all for their survival and that of their families – and of course, there is no other way. Rail Transport is non-existent and air freight is far too expensive so Azathoula and his 1966 Bedford truck are the next best thing! Although in accordance with traditions, every inch of the English steel has been covered in layers of paintings, tassels, mirrors and other calligraphic art – even the doors are carved out of wood. Up in the mountains, on the roofs of collective taxis, people, animals and goods sway precariously. Inside the vehicles, the situation is no better as the crew cram 20 into 12 seats. Ali Assan is one of the few who dares to drive in the snow along this narrow track. Director : Paul COMITI
