Video Description
Concert | Ancient Greek Music April 17, 2025 An evening of ancient Greek music presented by the Williams College Department of Classics. The Call of Kinnaru (led by John Franklin, University of Vermont) consists of voice, lyres, double-pipes, and frame-drum—what scholars call a 'Canaanite Orchestra.' Their repertoire includes actual notated music surviving from antiquity, as well as 'new ancient music' for songs from Euripides and Aristophanes, all performed on replica ancient instruments. Some of the songs are accompanied by animated 'new ancient art' by New Yorker cartoonist Glynnis Fawkes. Featuring: John Franklin (lyre, voice), Jamie Levis (tympanon, riqq), Rachel Fickes (lyre, voice), and Abigail Bradford (aulos). Marissa Henry (Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics, Williams College) is a classicist and songwriter who writes modern folk/rock/pop songs drawing on the images and themes of ancient Greek and Roman poetry.
