Over the past few years, if you'd have asked us whether you should buy an Audi Q7 as your next family car, our answer would have been a resounding yes. Seven-seat practicality, solid quality and a grown-up driving experience mean it's traditionally been a consummate all-rounder. However, the good old Q7 is getting on a bit now, so can it still cut the mustard in quite the same way as it did? And how does it fare against fresh-out-the-box luxury SUV rivals such as the all-new Range Rover Sport? There's another interesting aspect to this test, too. Back in its heyday, any sensible person would've specced their Q7 with a torquey and economical diesel engine. However, the world is a very different place these days, and attitudes to diesel have changed. So, does diesel power still make sense in cars like these? To find out, Rebecca Jackson pits the 50 TDI version of the Q7, with its 286 horsepower 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, against the Range Rover Sport P530, with its stonking 4.4-litre V8 petrol. Why? It's a cracking car to drive and to travel in, and running costs are bearable considering the car's performance and size. The Q7 is roomy, practical, and well finished. From the modern, lavish-feeling interior, to the smooth yet balanced way it drives, it is just a delight to spend time in whether you’re after a relaxing drive home or wanting to enjoy a good road. The array of powertrains and trims means that there’s also guaranteed to be a model to suit everyone – especially when a pure electric version joins the lineup. However, the reliability concerns can’t be ignored despite our hopes that these new Range Rover models will change that pervasive cloud of reliability fears that has hung over Land Rover for too many years. It also can’t be ignored that this is now one of the more expensive options in an already pricey lineup of posh 4x4s, and it’s a shame that four-wheel steer is only on the truly expensive models.
