On paper, it offers multi-GNSS and multi-band positioning like the Apple Watch Ultra and some Garmin models, but in challenging environments like tight switchbacks and slot canyons, its GPS accuracy wasn’t as strong as the competition. In open skies it performed fine, and total track lengths were generally in line with other watches, but in places like Annie’s Canyon the signal dropped until I emerged from cover. Altitude accuracy was hit or miss — sometimes within 10 feet, other times hundreds off — and unlike Garmin, there’s no option to calibrate the altimeter or adjust positioning settings for accuracy or battery life. Navigation is where the Galaxy Watch Ultra surprised me. The built-in Samsung Health app turned out to be the best hiking option, allowing GPX imports, offline map sync, turn prompts, and off-course alerts — all handled seamlessly without juggling multiple apps. The maps aren’t detailed (no contour lines or full trail names), but they’re good enough to keep you on route. I also tested Google Maps offline and Outdooractive. Google Maps worked for showing offline maps but didn’t give me offline trail routing. Outdooractive offered better maps and GPX import but required a paid subscription and sometimes had glitches. Overall, Samsung Health was the most reliable and user-friendly option for hiking navigation on this watch. Battery life was decent for a smartwatch — 2–3 days of regular wear, and 10–14 hours of continuous GPS activity with maps, enough for most day hikes. The bright 3,000-nit screen was easy to read in sunlight, the buttons worked well, and the watch felt fast and stable. Heart rate accuracy was on par with the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Garmin Epix Pro. The included band felt stiff, so I swapped it for a third-party strap for comfort. If you want a Wear OS smartwatch that can handle long hikes and give you solid navigation tools, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is the best option right now.
