Birch by Romeo Lane fire tragedy: What does accountability look like?

Twenty-five people have died in a fire at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, North Goa. The incident happened shortly after midnight on 7 December and killed mostly kitchen workers as well as four tourists. Most of them died due to suffocation. Birch, branded as Goa's "first island club”, is heavily advertised along the highway in North Goa. It was allegedly built on a salt pan and flouted multiple regulations. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has indicated that the club was operating illegally and ordered a magisterial inquiry. Prime Minister Modi has also announced ex-gratia payments of Rs 2 lakh for families of the deceased. But will accountability be affixed in this case? Or will it go the way of other national tragedies?
