Weekly BobBlast Issue 570 "Painting my Red Sofa Series, Part One" Welcome Back to Another BobBlast! Ready for another new series? This week’s BobBlast is Part One of Painting My Red Sofa Series. The concept of a red sofa teamed with a powerful woman is a concept I have been playing with for some time. Remember, a CONCEPT can be a subject you are curious about, or a variation of one idea (concept) repeated over and over. You are not making copies, trying to be exact—rather, you are exploring how many ways can you paint your concept. Within my Red Sofa series, I will try different variations such as: •One woman sitting on a red sofa •A couple sitting on a red sofa •Woman on a sofa, people behind her •Couple on a sofa, watching TV The possibilities are endless… I will often title the painting first, to help me focus on the painting at hand. I organize my thoughts and write them down in my sketchbook. Watch the Demo. You will see me sketch out my off-balance composition on gessoed watercolor paper. Next, I will create structure and visual interest with collage. No color yet… just working with the lightest light, the darkest dark and the mid-tone. My materials are: •Watercolor paper cut to 15x15 inches, to be mounted on a 16x16 inch wood panel •Regular Gel Medium is my glue •Collage materials—paper with graphics, such as stars, checkerboards, squiggles, etc. •Black and white Holbein acrylic •Brushes Part one shows the beginning of this new painting I have titled “Stepping Out”. The concept is clear, the off-balance composition is established with the first layer of collage plus black and white paint.
