Architectural Association School of Architecture The flexible, self-directed curricula on offer at the school, combined with the global nature of the institution, afford the Architectural Association (AA) a rare degree of awareness in acknowledging and confronting the social, technological and cultural challenges of today. With around 800 full-time students, over 7000 members, 250 tutors, and 100 administrative staff, the AA occupies eight Georgian houses in central London and a 350-acre woodland site at Hooke Park, Dorset. The AA seeks students who demonstrate initiative in engaging in public presentations, discussions, and debates within the School, the architectural community, and beyond. Lecture Date: 2012-02-24 AA First Year Lunchtime Lecture introduced by Valentin Bontjes van Beek. ‘… six weeks ago we were in a cab crossing the Thames on our way back to Notting Hill with Brian Eno and Diego Cortez – we’d just seen the Gerhard Richter and Pipilotti Rist shows. Brian was discussing the contents of a book project he has been talking about for a number of years: “… an attempt to answer the huge unanswered question, the dirty secret of the art world: what is art actually for?” … I think this would make a really inspiring talk for the First Year students …’.
