This allows scintillation counters to achieve greater sensitivity than conventional ion chamber and Geiger-Muller detectors and to measure the energy of individual particles. Though the principle of the scintillation counter was developed in 1944 during the Manhattan Project, the practical, portable scintillation counter was invented in 1949 in Winnipeg, Manitoba by University of Manitoba physics professor Dr. Robert Pringle.
