Calm Carving | Making A Simple Butter Spreader From A Log With Just One Carving Knife

Hello everyone, This was a nice little calm carve and a relaxing, joyful and mindful project that is very easy to do at home. With just one knife and a log, one can make butter spreaders easily to pass the time and to whittle away peacefully. Where I can, I like to be as free as possible with my practice. Having the freedom to work outside of a template or drawing aim allows me to respond to the wood, my mood, my environment and to make instinctive choices on the billet to create shapes. After training in art and design for 6 years, for me, this is the carving equivalent of a sketch! The outcomes are very simple and intuitive for this project and for me, it's the perfect learning exercise to gain knowledge on wood grain direction and how wood liked to behave. Carving butter spreaders isn't as involved as other projects, not does it take up too much of a time investment so I like to think of it as a great opportunity to let the imagination flow and to be explorative within this craft. This project also made for the perfect opportunity to test out my new wood carving knife. The blade is something that I picked up a a year and a half ago at a carving festival. Made by Nic Westermann, it is the Hewn and Hole turning aloud, a longer prototype if I'm not mistaken. It is a joy to use and is so obedient, the pointy tip and secondary bevel make for swift turns in the wood to create clear, clean and expressive curly shavings. I have been playing with handle shapes for a while now and have been through enough knives to know what I look for in a handle and what I find to be most comfortable for my hand. Made from walnut, this handle is perfect and has just the right amount of facets and the shape and length are spot on for me. The walnut wood was smooth and buttery and took to the knife well. The wood was also slightly spalted and created a beautiful cow print style pattern that ran through the fibres. I have a few spreaders around the home now that I use on the go daily as a simple and versatile utility item. The live in the drawer, on the table and in most hardly places... Even in my daughter's toy box! You can never have enough.
