Making and Breaking the Carbonized bread of Pompeii!

Video Description

We baked and CARBONIZED replicas of the famous, 2000 year-old Panis Quadratus Bread loaves found in Pompeii and Herculaneum. Then we broke them open to show you what's inside!! Today, we're diving into ancient Rome, exploring what happens when bread meets the power of a volcano, inspired by the Mt. Vesuvius eruption that froze Pompeii in time. Watch as we conduct our carbonization experiment on Roman bread, turning it into a time capsule of culinary history. 🔥🧪 We carbonized 3 loaves of Roman bread to replicate the historical "panis quadratus" artifacts found from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Watch how we did it, and watch us break them open so you can see what's inside! We also show you a before and after comparison to show you how carbonization tends to shrink items a little and makes them much lighter. This experiment left us with a question: The string tied around the middle of our loaves remained in tact, but the artifacts don't have a string around them.
