Covering a Tray With a Solid Top // Adventures in Bookbinding

I teach people how to get started with bookbinding and advance their technical skills. Bookbinding is best taught in person, but everyone doesn’t have that opportunity. My videos are meant to supplement in person training. But if this isn’t an option, I hope they are good enough that they will help you develop skills on your own. The binding of the codex form of the book has been developed over the last two millennia. There have been many different kinds of binding structures developed in this time. My approach is based on traditional techniques. But this does not make my approach inflexible or limiting of creativity. It provides the foundation for making books that are structurally sound, extremely practical, and can last hundreds of years.

Video Description
Once you've made a tray it needs to be covered. I use two methods in covering trays. I demonstrate the first in this video, which is a tray that needs a solid top. For instance, a lid of a box. The second method is when the lid does not need to be solid. It might be the trays of a clamshell enclosure, where the trays are attached to a case. To cover in this case, the walls can be covered by a piece of material that wraps around the tray. I will demonstrate this in the next video. I'll also make a short video on how to line the inside of the top of a tray.
