Born in 1950, he became a full-time professional player in 1979 and made history as Scotland’s first world darts champion. Jocky Wilson wasn’t just a darts champion, he was a true Scottish legend. He carved out a legacy that went far beyond the game. This episode tells the story of Jocky's rise from a miner in a small Scottish town to a top darts player. Known for his unorthodox style, Jocky faced personal struggles but left a lasting impact on the sport, becoming a two-time Darts Champion of the World, winning in 1982 and again in 1989. Throughout the 1980s, Jocky was a dominant force in darts. Jocky's rivalry with Eric Bristow and John Lowe was one of the highlights of that era, providing fans with many memorable sporting matches. In addition to his world titles, Jocky won numerous other tournaments, including the British Matchplay and the British Gold Cup. His stout but diminutive build, crooked grin and ability to out drink all-comers while consistently winning the big titles made him riveting viewing. He held an impressive record at the championship, reaching at least the quarter-finals every year from his debut in 1979 until 1991. Despite his success, Jocky’s career came to an abrupt end in 1995 when he retired without warning. He then withdrew from the public eye, facing a series of health struggles. He passed away on March 24, 2012, just two days after his 62nd birthday, leaving behind a lasting legacy that helped elevate darts to unprecedented heights.
