Deaf School Pros and Cons - Why Deaf Children Should Go To Deaf Schools with Warren Keller

This video is especially for hearing parents who have a deaf child. This video shares some more information about deaf schools and deaf education in general and also discusses the benefits of sending your deaf child to a school for the deaf as well as the disadvantages compared with sending your deaf child to a mainstream school. This video features a short interview with a Deaf football coach who himself has attended both deaf schools and mainstream schools- he points out the main differences between deaf schools and mainstream schools and lists a few different pros and cons of Deaf schools. He explains why he strongly believes that deaf children should go to deaf schools. Approximately 2 or 3 in every 1,000 children here in the United States are born deaf or hard of hearing and most deaf children, more than 90%, are born to hearing parents (nad.org). There are over 17,000 deaf children in California and there are two schools for the Deaf in California- in northern California, Fremont and in southern California- Riverside, and less than 1,000 of those deaf children attend California School for the Deaf. And nationwide, about 86% of deaf students are in mainstream schools. The football coach also briefly explains the the risk of not exposing your deaf child to language sooner (after birth, shortly after birth, or shortly after losing hearing due to fever, sickness, etc.) and the importance of having exposure to sign language as early as possible to give the deaf child a better chance of succeeding in academics, school, and in the hearing world.
