Video Description

How 7 Victoria Crosses were awarded during the storming of the Taku forts in China, 1860. It is the 2nd part of my talk covering the 2nd Opium War. Chris Green is The History Chap; telling stories that brings the past to life. SUPPORT MY CHANNEL 1)Become A Patron https://www.thehistorychap.com/Supporters-club or 2)Join My YouTube membership https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyTGpFsD0AJkQ6KSCW8d_Ug/join This episode tells the story of the 7 men to be awarded during the battle as well as the storming of the Taku Forts in 1860. I then go on to explain the British (and French) occupation Beijing and their forcing the Chinese to sign a peace treaty, which still impacts China's view of the west to this day. Along the way you will also hear how the Emperor of China's Summer Palace was burned to the ground by the British, including the future General Charles Gordon (Gordon of Khartoum). You will also learn how the future General Sir Garnet Wolseley narrowly missed being beheaded by the Chinese, and how Private John Moyse was beheaded and became a Victorian legend. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today. History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens. So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life. My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!" Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham.
