About

Enabling world-class research in economics on all levels, to be conducted at the University of Zurich. The UBS Center for Economics in Society is an Associated Institute at the Department of Economics of the University of Zurich. It was established in 2012, enabled by a founding donation by UBS, which the bank made on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. In view of the generous donation, the university named the UBS Center after its benefactor. The UBS Center serves two main aims. First, it enables world-class research in economics on all levels, to be conducted at the University’s Department of Economics. It thereby supports the department’s ambition to become one of the top economics departments in Europe and to make Zurich one of the best places for research in economics. The UBS Center’s other aim is to serve as a platform for dialogue between academia, business, politics, and the broader public, fostering continuous knowledge transfer.

Video Description

"Around the world, faith in democracy is falling. Russia, Turkey, and Venezuela have moved from flawed democracies to authoritarian regimes. Brexit and the rise of far-right parties show that even stable Western democracies are struggling. Partisanship and mutual distrust are increasing. What, if anything, should we do about these problems? In the book 'Debating Democracy', leading philosophers Jason Brennan and Hélène Landemore debate whether the solution lies in having less democracy or more." – Oxford University Press Hélène Landemore is a professor of political theory at @yale and a Distinguished Researcher at the @oxforduniversity Institute for Ethics in AI. At Yale she is also a leader of the Institution for Social and Policy Studies (ISPS)'s Democratic Innovations program. Jason Brennan is an American philosopher and political scientist. He teaches at @georgetownuniversity in Washington. https://www.ubscenter.uzh.ch/en/news_events/insights/2023-11-democracies_under_threat.html Democracies around the globe are increasingly under threat. In many countries, populists are gaining ground, polarization is increasing, and voters often fail to vote. Public intellectuals are debating the prospects for post-democratic politics. At the same time, authoritarian regimes are seeing a resurgence. What is driving these trends? And what can be done to reverse them? This was the main topic of our series, which consisted of three events, beginning with a lecture by Wolfgang Schäuble (in German), who provided a political-historical framework of the topic, followed by a talk by experimental psychologist Steven Pinker, who discussed the role of rationality for democratic societies. We concluded with our annual Forum for Economic Dialogue, where experts from various fields discussed the topic from both a political and an economic perspective. #EconomicsForSociety #UZH #shareubs
