Video Description
In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains DENTAL ABSCESS (aka tooth abscess) including causes, symptoms and treatment of a dental abscess. What is a dental abscess? According to NHS UK "A dental abscess is a build-up of pus in the teeth or gums caused by an infection. It needs urgent treatment by a dentist. A dental abscess will not go away on its own" Are there different types of dental abscess? There are three main types of tooth abscess: 1. The first is an infection that develops in your gums. It doesn't usually affect your tooth or supporting structures. 2. The second is something called a periapical abscess. This is an infection that forms at the tip of your tooth root. If you have a tooth that's decayed or fractured, bacteria can enter your tooth and spread to the pulp which is the innermost part of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria invade the pulp, infection can spread to the tip of your tooth's root, then, eventually to the surrounding bone, causing an abscess to form. 3. Finally periodontal… This infection starts in the bone and tissues that support your teeth. A periodontal abscess usually results from gum disease and is more common among adults. What are common symptoms of dental abscess? Signs of a dental abscess can include: - intense toothache or pain in your gums - redness inside the mouth, or outside the mouth on the face or jaw - sensitivity to hot or cold food and drink in the affected area - a bad taste in your mouth - difficulty opening your mouth and chewing food - a swollen face or jaw - a high temperature What is the treatment for a dental abscess? Dental abscesses are usually treated by a dentist. The dentist will drain away the pus. If a problem with your tooth has caused the abscess, you may need root canal treatment, or the tooth may be removed. You'll be given a local anaesthetic, so you do not feel any pain. You may be offered painkillers to take for a few days after treatment and may also be given antibiotics.
