Caroline, a nurse in the chemotherapy ward, meets Zoie, a patient whose attitude to her illness she finds inspiring. Alongside the medics, we meet ancillaries who help to keep this enormous hospital running. Paul in catering is trying to create the perfect sandwich, while security guards Scott and Malcolm's tough exteriors conceal kind hearts.
