After visiting Rwanda, he discovered a new reality: clean streets, a people-first infrastructure, and a deep sense of national pride and unity. Rwanda is not the dark, post-genocide image often portrayed in global media, but a beacon of reconciliation, discipline, beauty, and unity. Matinyarare visited the Mutobo demobilization camp, where soldiers and refugees were reintegrated into society. He then visited the Democratic Republic of Congo to meet the M23 and understand the conflict in eastern Congo through the lens of the Battle of Goma during the January 2025 Goma Offensive. In Goma, the M23 fighters were disciplined, organized, and socializing with the citizens. Matinyarare then traveled to Bukavu to meet the rebel movement's leadership and their political wing, the Congolese River Alliance. The documentary explores the complex dynamics surrounding Rwanda, the M23 rebel group, the broader regional conflict in East Africa, and the causes of this conflict. It reveals that the Belgians created tribal divisions among over 400 tribes in the Great Lakes region, isolating the Rwandan monarchy from the people of the region. This led to two genocides: the first in 1960 when Belgium gave the Hutu majority and themselves independence from what they called the Nilotic Tutsi oppressor; and the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi by Hutu fundamentalists who embraced the perma-Hutu ideology portraying Tutsi as oppressors. This same ideology spread into Burundi and Congo, where the Congolese government under Mobutu developed an anti-Tutsi and anti-Kinyarwanda stance. This led to the deployment of government soldiers and rebel groups to forcibly displace Kinyarwanda-speaking people from their ancestral land in Congo into Rwanda, where many became refugees. The documentary calls for a rethinking of African narratives, seeking unity, and speaking truth. The documentary explores the conflict between the Kinyarwanda-speaking Congolese and the Congolese government, focusing on recent battles in eastern Congo. The Congolese government has deployed NATO mercenaries and invited the U.S. to fight M23 for Congolese minerals, reflecting recolonization. The documentary highlights the struggles civilians face and the political and military interventions shaping the region's future. It also highlights the importance of African unity and the collective desire for healing amidst ongoing tensions.
