Video Description

East Timor is hard to find on a world map. Wedged between Bali and Australia, this small island struggles to break its isolation, with almost no resources. Agriculture and fishing are the only means for locals to earn a few dollars each month. Timor is still recovering from the brutal war that devastated the country following Indonesia’s invasion from 1976 to 1999—a conflict that claimed between 100,000 and 200,000 lives. Today, the island remains divided: one part under Indonesian control, the other, Timor-Leste, independent since 2002. In the most remote villages, people live completely cut off. Their only link to the outside world is a rough, often flooded track, where a single mistake can be deadly. Yet, for many farmers, this risky journey is the only way to sell their crops at the market in Dili, the capital. After 10 grueling hours on the road, disappointment is common - the reward often far less than the effort. Directed by Guillaume l'Hotellier and Jean-Pierre Guillerez
