When Elgar heard it, he remarked: 'I'd never realised it was such a big work'. Was this an implied criticism? I doubt it. It is curious that Elgar himself never recorded the piece although he recorded the earlier Serenade. Perhaps the cool initial reception in 1905 of the Introduction and Allegro had left him dubious about its merits, in which case it is not surprising that the breadth, nobility and lyrical poetry of Barbirolli's interpretation came as something of a revelation even to the composer. Barbirolli recorded the work again in 1929, a third time, with the Hallé, in 1947, a fourth time (for LP) again with the Hallé in 1953, a fifth time in 1956 (Hallé again); he made the recording on this present disc with the Sinfonia of London and the Allegri String Quartet on 11 May 1962, having recorded the Serenade the previous day. Undoubtedly this sixth recording is a classic, the string-playing possessing a fiery vigour and a luxurious sheen. The fugue is wonderfully delineated, full of rhythmic vitality, and the contrasts and blending of the string quartet with the main body of strings are as poetic as they are skilfully achieved. Yes, it is a big work. Barbirolli finds its heartbeat, as he does even more poignantly in Sospiri (1914) for strings, harp and organ. What are the 'Sighs' of the title? Nothing trivial, we may be sure, for there is heartbreak in this music and, as Barbirolli conducts it, a Mahlerian nervous tension. Whatever was at the root of this exposure of innermost grief, it shook Elgar to the core of his being. The Serenade of 1892 has no such aspiration. Its gentle charm, its lyrical impulse, contain the essence of what we call the Elgarian style. Its rhythmical opening figure blossoms into a warm, springing theme, which Barbirolli phrases with characteristic élan. The Larghetto second movement is the slow movement of the First Symphony in microcosm, an example of how the grand Elgar is contained within the more modest outpourings. It is the mark of Barbirolli's greatness as an Elgar conductor that he perceived the wholeness of Elgar. Not for him the theory of 'two Elgars', the composer of the large-scale masterpieces on one hand and the writer of the lighter, slighter pieces on the other. Barbirolli saw how the smaller works were tributaries flowing into the main broad stream. This perceptiveness is especially notable in his conducting of the Elegy and Sospiri, recorded with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in mid-July 1966. Together they do not last 10 minutes, but in that time what an emotional canvas is covered. The Elegy (1909) is the more formal.
