In 1326, Isabella and her lover, Roger Mortimer, launched a coup that led to Edward's deposition, imprisonment, and presumed murder at Berkeley Castle. However, later accounts suggested Edward may have escaped and lived in exile as a hermit, raising questions that linger to this day.
