1982 Falklands War Day by Day | PART 1/2 A day-by-day account of the Falklands War, made using frontline combat footage filmed by news crews embedded with the British task force and political reporting from London, Buenos Aires and Washington. In early 1982, the Falkland Islands, a remote British territory in the South Atlantic, became the focal point of a long-standing dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom. On 2 April 1982, Argentine forces invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands, claiming sovereignty over the territory known in Argentina as las Islas Malvinas. The British government, led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, condemned the invasion and swiftly assembled a naval task force to retake the islands. The conflict lasted 74 days, claimed 907 lives, and saw fierce battles at sea, in the air, and on land. Presented here is the first of two compilations covering the conflict and its aftermath.
