On May 29, 1914 the RMS Empress of Ireland was left dead in the water after a horrendous impact with a coal-carrying freighter. The result was a gash in the liner's side that opened her to the Saint Lawrence River, a disaster that took the lives of more passenger than the sinking of RMS Titanic two years earlier.
