The reason why ceramics are fired at high temperatures in a kiln - The ceramics are completely chemically and physically changed. They become harder. This is the final stage of ceramics production. The ordinary 'soil' on the ground changes into a material with completely different characteristics. Ceramics are made in the following stages: shaping (shaping) - drying - first firing (first firing) - carving or coloring (relief, intaglio) - glaze application - second firing (second firing). The second firing, the final stage of pottery production, is the most difficult and requires a high level of concentration, experience, and time in the pottery making process. It is fired at a high temperature of 1250 degrees Celsius or higher for about 12 to 16 hours. Raising the temperature from 1 degree Celsius to 100 degrees Celsius is not difficult. Up to 400 degrees Celsius, the particles of the pottery clay and glaze become adhesive to each other. At this time, the pottery begins to shrink slightly. Also, the strength of the pottery itself begins to increase. B. At 600 degrees Celsius, the atomic association of the pottery clay and glaze ends and it is an inactive stage. Organic matter (vegetable, animal) in the porcelain clay and glaze is completely removed, and from this point on, pure chemical changes occur. C. Up to 1000 degrees Celsius, a new atomic arrangement occurs in the porcelain, and this rearrangement increases the strength again. D. The last 1000 to 1300 degrees Celsius is the most important stage. This is the key reason for firing porcelain at a high temperature of 1200 degrees Celsius. The atomic arrangement of the porcelain is completely rearranged. As a result, all the atoms in the porcelain are crystallized. The carbon in the porcelain is completely decomposed, chemical shrinkage is completed, and the entire porcelain shrinks by about 10% to 20%. This is an important time when oxidation firing (oxidation firing) and reduction firing (reduction firing) are determined depending on the amount of oxygen supplied.
