Video Description

This is the first time we’ve ever caught this deep sea creature on camera... and it’s a BABY. It’s so cute! It’s a colossal squid. The baby is only about a third of a meter long but when it’s full grown it’ll be 7 meters. In the footage, you can see its organs inside its transparent body. But the red color on its arms tell us that it can likely switch between being transparent and opaque… This first glimpse of the colossal squid in its natural habitat was captured by scientists onboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute research vessel Falkor using a remotely operated deep sea vehicle - tech that’s gotten a lot better in recent years. We hope it will teach us about how amazing creatures like this really behave in the wild.
