Video Description

Frank O'Cain's demonstration at the Art Students League of NY on October 14, 2025 shows how to work with thin layers of acrylic paint to build an abstract painting. During the demo, the painting is changed over and over again without becoming muddy or too heavy. Since this is meant more as a demo than the creation of a perfect final work, you may like one of the earlier versions but can see what happens if you continue to work. With this method, the artist can build up slowly in developing and refining an idea before locking in the final. Frank O'Cain is an important instructor at the Art Students League of New York, introducing generations of students to the basic principles of Abstract Painting developed by Cezanne and Hans Hofmann. Currently, he teaches both on-line and in studio classes. Recorded and edited by Stephen Durkee
