Video Description

Marc Lachièze-Rey is a former student of the École Normale Supérieure (rue d'Ulm) and holds a doctorate in physics. He is currently a research director at the CNRS and works at the APC (Astroparticle and Cosmology) laboratory. He specializes in fundamental theoretical physics and is interested in the relationship between this discipline and mathematics and philosophy. He has written numerous articles and several books, including Beyond Space and Time: The New Physics (Le Pommier, 2008), The Avatars of the Void (Le Pommier, 2005), On Infinity (with J.-P. Luminet, Dunod, 2005), Figures of the Sky (with J.-P. Luminet, Le Seuil / Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris, 1998), Introduction to Cosmology (4th edition, Dunod, 2004), Time Travel: Modern Physics and Temporality (Seuil Sciences Ouvertes 2013), and Einstein at the Beach (Dunod, 2015). "Gravitation" Going Beyond Einstein, from the Big Bang to Black Holes What could be more familiar than falling bodies? And what could be further from our intuition than black holes or gravitational waves? Yet they all stem from the same phenomenon: gravitation. While we owe Newton's "universal gravitation," which would go from strength to strength over the centuries, the current theory is the work of Einstein, who adopted a radically different perspective: general relativity identifies gravitation with the form of a new entity: space-time. In this brilliant synthesis, the author tells us how our understanding of gravitation was forged, focusing on Einstein's conception of the world, so revolutionary that it overturned our entire framework of thought. He also shows that general relativity is probably not the "ultimate theory" of gravitation, as illustrated by its inadequacies in the face of extreme cases revealed by cosmology, not to mention its incompatibility with quantum physics. What are the avenues of research today? How can they be tested? Science faces an immense challenge. To purchase the book: https://editions.flammarion.com/gravi...
