The rise of the Habsburgs in Austria began with their inheritance of the region and an early struggle for legitimacy, which they supported through strategic adoption of Babenberg symbolism. Their fortunes changed with the forgery of the Privilegium Maius, which manufactured Roman and Imperial charters to elevate Austria’s status. This deception laid the groundwork for the strategic acquisition of Tyrol, a wealthy alpine region added through manipulation and opportunistic alliances. Yet, the family faced setbacks, including Austria’s division and internal conflicts between competing Habsburg branches.
