As food prices continue to rise, I’ve been turning to the wisdom of women from the past — women who knew how to make nourishing, budget-friendly meals out of the simplest ingredients. In this video, I’m sharing three hearty soups that stretch your dollar without sacrificing comfort or flavor. We’ll make: 🍲 A rich Beef and Barley Soup from a 1970s slow cooker cookbook 🐟 A creamy Fish Chowder from the wartime period 🧅 A classic French Onion Soup straight from a 1943 wartime cookbook These recipes are humble, wholesome, and deeply satisfying — proof that old-fashioned cooking still has so much to teach us today. If you love frugal living, traditional homemaking, and simple homemade meals, I hope you’ll find some cozy inspiration here in my farmhouse kitchen. ❤️ BEEF & BARLEY SOUP •1 beef short rib, or other inexpensivecut of beef •2 carrots, perled & sliced •1 cup celery, sliced •1 large onion, peeled & diced •2 potatoes, peeled & diced •1/4 cup snipped parsley •2/3 cup pearl barley •1 large can diced tomatoes, with juice •1 Tbsp beef bouillon •5 cups water • 2 tsp salt In a skillet, brown short ribs on all sides. In slow cooker add the carrot, celery, onion, potato, barley and parsley. Place the short rib on top. Combine the bouillon, water, tomatoes & salt. Pour over meat. Optionally add a bay leaf or herb for flavour (sage, thyme). Cook on high for 6-8 hours. Serves 8-10 FISH CHOWDER • 1-2 cans sardines or other fish •1 tsp bacon grease or butter •3 medium onions, peeled & diced •5 potatoes, peeled & diced •4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper •3 cups boiling water •4 cups milk •1 can evaporated milk, or 1 cup light cream •crackers In a pot or dutch oven heat the bacon drippings. Add onions and cook until tender. Add the potatoes, fish with juices, and salt & pepper. Add water. Simmer, covered, 25 minutes or until done. Add milk & evaporated milk. Heat. Serve with crackers. Serves 6 FRENCH ONION SOUP (slow cooker) •4 cups thinly sliced onions •5 tbsp butter •5 beef bouillon cubes •5 1/3 cups water • •1 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper •5 rounds of toast •grated Parmesan or mozzarellafor garnish Saute the onions in butter until a rich golden brown, seasoning with salt & pepper. Dissolve bouillon cubes in boiling water. Place onions and broth together in a slow cooker. Cook on low all day, or high for 3-4 hours. Serve over toast, sprinkled with cheese.
