Based on a design from Alec Issigonis, and with backing from the head of BMC, Leonard Lord, the Mini was intended to compete with other micro-car imports to Britain during the 1950s fuel shortage. It quickly became hugely popular and became a key part of British culture, becoming famous in movies like The Italian Job, and TV shows like Mr Bean. As the years progressed, the Mini had little changes, but eventually started to look more outdated next to the competition. After multiple changes in ownership, Mini eventually was bought by BMW in 1994, who vowed to design and produce an all-new model, which launched in 2001. Although the BMW Mini still resembles a classic Mini, everyone today knows which is the true Mini.
