I think I found it. The result was quite surprising. Not only is it extremely sensitive, but the use of a commercially available preamp module with AGC makes this a really simple solution to build. The PCB files that I have made available through the PCBWay Share page also makes it easy for anyone to order boards and build their own. CORRECTION: I mention that the preamp unit is a MAX4066. Obviously this is incorrect. It's a MAX9814 unit.
