And my Indie 2D Speedrun Platformer Game has never been better! As we go through this story together, I'll analyse my own art through the lenses of Games like Undertale, Celeste, Ghostrunner, Ultrakill, Hollow Knight, and many more. It's also a video about the importance of Speedrunning. Strata is similar to games like Neon White in that it's designed around speedrunning (as opposed to classic speed games like the early Legend of Zelda games, where speedrunning was a happy accident). I make heavy reference to the wider speedrun scene, like Trackmania, Sonic the Hedgehog, Games Done Quick and all sorts. I want to start out by thanking fellow Indie Game Developer/ Gamedev YouTuber @JuniperDev for the initial inspiration for this Devlog Video Essay thing. It was a fantastic video, and its virality is very much deserved. It spoke to me specifically because the entirety of Strata is built on some incredibly janky code. So, this video is about me accepting my limitations as a developer, and how doing so lead to a really unique take on the platformer genre. Also, the @GMTK Game Jam is happening right now!!! If it weren't for the fact I just spent like three weeks working tirelessly to prepare the game for this video and need a break, I would very much be jumping in. They've made it a four-day game jam this time, which I think is a fantastic decision that makes what was already the most accessible jam even more so. Thanks for inspiring so many people.
