Once upon a time, Haiti was the most prosperous colony the world had ever seen. Its economy overshadowed the newly-founded United States and was more valuable than the combined New World holdings of the Spanish Empire. For a time, it was the most valuable piece of land on Earth – but this wealth came at a horrifying human cost. Haiti's prosperity was built on the backbone of an exceptionally violent and brutal form of slavery. This grim reality, however, paved the way for the largest and only successful slave revolt in history. As the second free nation in the Americas, Haiti overflowed with hope and optimism for a future shaped by and for its people.
