How to make Winding Sticks | Building Tools to Build Tools to Build Furniture Part 1

View ChannelAbout
Hi! Welcome to my workshop! I'm fascinated by hand tool woodworking and over the last year I've slowly started collecting, building, and learning how to work with these tools. I'm often inspired by watching other woodworkers and enjoy seeing the different ways they go about doing something. I want to join them in filming my process as I continue to learn, make my own tools, and explore the wonderful world of woodworking. Please like, comment, subscribe, and let me know what you'd like to see me make next! Video Description
This is the first video in a series I'm calling "tool make". I learned how to make these winding sticks from Paul Sellers (link below) and they will be a great asset in helping me flatten lumber for future tools I plan to make! They are made out of soft maple and the inlays are made out of cherry. Overall I think they turned out great! There's a few small gaps in some of the inlay pieces that I wish weren't there, but for having never done an inlay before I'd say I did a mighty fine job I could be proud of. Something that I think would have helped is if I had a router plane to flatten the bottom of the inlay and ensure it was the same depth all around. Unfortunately I don't have a router plane, but thankfully I plan to make a router plane for my next tool make so I'll be able to remedy that in the future! If you enjoyed this video please like, comment, and subscribe! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About the "tool make" series: The inspiration for this series came from watching Adrian Preda's videos. I remember stumblingly upon his videos and was inspired by all he was able to do from his small apartment shop and all he was able to accomplish with a pretty basic set of tools. I thought to myself, "hey, I've got a pretty simple workshop in my garage and if he can do all that why can't I?" My next thought was, "well I still don't have some of the more basic tools I'd need like a router plane or try square and I don't have a lot of money to spend on tools." Which then was quickly followed by my next thought, "why don't I build my own tools and film a series out of it?!" And here we are... My hope with this series, and with my channel in general, is that people would not only enjoy watching the process of something being created, but that they would also be inspired by what all can be done with a few tools, time, and ingenuity. So if this is something you're into subscribe for more homemade tools to come! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How to make Winding Sticks (part 1) | Paul Sellers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EToMNxJ4-vw **Follow me on Instagram** https://www.instagram.com/asimpleworkshop/ ------------ Tools I use ------------ Japanese Saws: - SUIZAN 9.5 Inch Ryoba Pull Saw: https://amzn.to/38FVxf4 (Amazon) - SUIZAN 9.5 Inch Dozuki Dovetail Pull Saw: https://amzn.to/3mZfrHr (Amazon) Chisels: - Narex Richter Bevel Edge Chisel (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1): https://amzn.to/2WNUEMc (Amazon) Mallet/Hammer: - Thor Soft and Hard Face Hammer: https://amzn.to/37SvItn (Amazon) Clamps: - IRWIN QUICK-GRIP Clamps Set, 8-Piece: https://amzn.to/3aIhBIT (Amazon) Sharpening: - Ultra Sharp Diamond Sharpening Stones: https://amzn.to/38RARBh (Amazon) Drill Press: - Wen 4208 8", 5-Speed Drill Press: https://amzn.to/3pryuMi (Amazon) The above are tools I use for just about every project in the workshop and come highly recommended!
