Full-Length Watercolour Tutorial: Paint a Robin Step-by-Step with me, Anna Mason: I’m so pleased to share this step-by-step watercolour class with you here on YouTube - in FULL, completely free. Until now, this painting class has lived exclusively inside Nature Studio, my online art school. For personal reasons, which I'll share below, this feels like the right time to bring this class out into the big wide internet so you can enjoy it too. This class shows you everything. I also hope sharing this will give you a taste of what you can achieve from my full classes, which are much longer and have much more detailed instruction than the shorter mini classes I share for free on YouTube. Ever since I released this tutorial some years ago, members of my online school have been achieving beautiful, lifelike results and I wanted to give you the opportunity to paint a realistic robin of your own. Different from robins seen in the US, this is a European Robin is common here in the UK and across Europe and parts of North Africa. Robins are much loved garden birds, not only for their cheerful birdsong and confidence around people, but also for the symbolism they hold for many people. As well as being a symbol of winter and Christmas time, they’re also often seen as little messengers from loved ones we’ve lost. So for many of us, robins can carry a deep sense of comfort and connection at Christmas time. The reason now feels like the time to share this class with you for free is deeply personal for me. A little over 18 months ago, I suddenly lost my 44-year old husband Phil to a cardiac arrest. Lately I've been noticing a lot of robins - especially one very close encounter the day after I asked for a sign. You can read the story on my blog (link below). 🎨 Here's how this watercolour class works: Below you'll find a link to a page on my website where you can download the free PDF that includes an outline drawing you can trace and the reference photo. There you'll also find a list of the paints I used (but you can use the nearest match you have). Once you've downloaded the free PDF, gathered the supplies you'll need and made your outline drawing, you can use this video class to paint along with me step by step. You don't need to paint it all in one go. In Nature Studio, the video classes are made up of smaller parts. For sharing on YouTube, we've put it all into one video. But you can stop at any point, make a note of where you were up to, then pick up where you left off later. This isn't about speeding your way to an end result you're happy with. It's about internalising the process, and learning the slow, layered watercolour method that feels relaxing AND gets you realistic results.. Take your time and let the process calm your mind. But by all means give it a go, but be kind to yourself if you find it difficult at first, because you're not starting at the very beginning.
