I Visited RYE At CHRISTMAS & It Was MIND-BLOWING!

Merry Christmas one and all.  Given the special time of year, it’s time to get festive and explore one of East Sussex’s most famous tourist destinations – today I am in Rye, and honestly it is like stepping back in time.  In this 4K walking tour I’ll be taking you through the breathtaking town and showing you all there is to see and do. If you’re looking for historic buildings and attractions, cosy pubs, independent shopping and more coffee places than you can shake a stick at, this is the place to go this winter!   Starting off slightly outside the town centre, we take the scenic route down the river and over a level railway crossing.  First up we get a sweet bean-to-cup coffee and some breakfast before starting to look at some of the hidden gem antique shops. Then it is on to the main high street itself which has plenty of boutique shops, gift shops, pet shops, book shops - there is something for all the family.  Our adventures then take us to St Mary’s Church, which apart from being beautiful on the inside gives you an opportunity to climb the bell tower, which gives insane panoramic views across the countryside and the sea.  We then treat ourselves to a beer and lunch at one of Rye’s many dog-friendly pubs.    Walk with me down the cobbled streets that are literally like something from a Charles Dickens novel, lined with ancient buildings and quirky half-timbered houses.  We take a look at the National Trust attraction Lamb House where there’s currently a Christmas event running to see what the celebrations would have looked like in the 1900s.  Mermaid Street is one of the most iconic in the whole town, and it’s the location of the very haunted pub, The Mermaid Inn, which was where smugglers hung out in the 1700s and was even featured on the TV programme Most Haunted.  Then on to check out the local history at the Rye Castle Museum, based in Ypres Tower which formed part of Rye’s defences. Finally we walk to the Rye Creative Centre which just for the one weekend was running a Christmas market, featuring festive gifts, artisan crafts and mince pies! Not to mention the decorations, Christmas lights and trees scattered everywhere, turning the place into a real winter wonderland!    It’s a mind-blowing market town with so much history and is perfect for a day trip or a short break.
