After 15 years of keeping the vows of a Buddhist monk — recently alone, without the support of a sangha or monastery — I’ve come to a difficult but necessary decision: I’m returning to lay life. This isn’t a failure of the Buddha Dharma, nor a rejection of monastic values. It’s a reflection on the stark realities of trying to live as a monastic in the modern West — isolated, misunderstood, and without the community and support that the tradition has relied upon for centuries. In this video, I speak candidly about why I made this choice, the cultural and practical challenges I’ve faced, and my ongoing commitment to supporting sincere Dharma practitioners through new, accessible paths.
