[Beidi], whose full name is Northern Zhenwu Xuantian Shangdi (the True Martial Supreme Emperor of the Mysterious Heaven), is an important deity in Han Chinese folk belief. He goes by many other titles, such as Xuantian, Xuantian Shangdi, Wu Dadi (Great Martial Emperor), Zhenwu Dadi (True Martial Great Emperor), and Beiji Dadi (Great Emperor of the North Pole). Colloquially, he is also known as Shangdi Gong, Shangdi Ye, or Di Ye Gong. Beidi is not only the guardian deity of the North but also commands all aquatic creatures, thus holding the status of a God of Water as well. The worship of Beidi stems from ancient star worship. In ancient times, the Twenty-Eight Mansions (constellations) were divided into four directions: the Azure Dragon of the East, the White Tiger of the West, the Vermilion Bird of the South, and the Black Tortoise (Xuanwu) of the North. As the guardian deity of the North, Beidi is in charge of the wind and rain. Because the shape of the seven northern constellations resembles a turtle intertwined with a snake—and both creatures are associated with water—it aligns perfectly with the Five Elements, where water corresponds to the North and the color black. This is the origin of the term "Xuan" (mysterious/black). Furthermore, because a turtle shell provides defense, the term "Wu" (martial) is added, forming the name Xuanwu. The origin of the Cantonese people's worship of Beidi is likely tied to the great importance they place on water sources. Because the people of Guangdong have traditionally made their living by the water, and their rivers flow from the north, they deeply understand the significance of northern water sources. Therefore, they worship both the Chidi or Red Emperor (the Great King Hongsheng of the South Sea) and Beidi, hoping for abundant water, favorable weather, and a bountiful harvest of fish and rice year after year. The Beidi belief is not merely a religious conviction; it is a profound embodiment of cultural traditions and folk customs.
