About

We tell stories about the monarchs you know, and the lives you don’t. Historic Royal Palaces looks after six sites: Hampton Court Palace, the Tower of London, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace, Banqueting House and Hillsborough Castle. Together these sites tell 1,000 years of history, from the royal families that chose these palaces, to the many lives of those that lived and worked alongside them. We are a charity, and your support gives the palaces a future, for everyone. Stay tuned for new videos on Wednesdays two or three times a month.

Video Description

Dan Snow is back at one of his favourite castles — the Tower of London. In this video, the History Hit presenter is exploring a time of great change at the Tower, as it metamorphosed from a Norman citadel to the ultimate medieval superfortress. Over the 13th and 14th centuries, the Tower of London vastly expanded and modernised, transforming into a classic medieval castle, including a sumptuous royal palace. The Tower of London recently reopened its medieval palace, focusing on the royal apartments built here in the 14th century by two renowned builder kings, Henry III and Edward I.
