Intricate Base for A Simple Shape

Trimming lidded forms is like going through the steps of a dance, (says the person who avoids dancing). What I mean by that is, I always trim lidded pots in the same way. I start with the underside of the lid, then the body is trimmed the right way up, then the lid is stuffed into the opening and turned in-situ, the body acting like a chuck and holding the lid firmly in place. Then the lid is removed, the rim of the jar is trimmed and finally the whole lot is sliced off the wheel-head, flipped upside-down, and now it’s the turn of the lid to act like a chuck for the body. It’s slotted over, revealing the base of the jar, which I can do then trim. Phew, writing the process out feels much more complicated than actually trimming the pot is. The last little notable thing with this piece is the alternative foot, you may have seen something similar on some mugs I made recently, but essentially the idea is to somewhat mimic the shape of the pot in the foot itself, in this instance that’s some very simple angularity. The only downside is that it favours not being glazed as I don’t want to cover and hide those lovely burnished regions of clay, especially that divot in the middle that’s just asking to have one’s thumb resting in it as the pot is held. #satisfying #howto #potterytutorial #craft #maker #madeinlondon #ceramics
