Hurricane Melissa left parts of Jamaica unrecognizable. This was my first day seeing the aftermath, firsthand. Today I'm walking through Belmont, Westmoreland with Sophie and Michael. This is the South West coast that was hit hardest by the storm, speaking with residents as they show me what remains of their homes. Some people lost everything, their homes completely gone. walls torn apart, roofs disappeared, personal belongings scattered — this is the real aftermath, seen from the ground. I’m sharing this so these stories are seen and remembered, and so the impact of Hurricane Melissa on everyday Jamaicans isn’t forgotten. People need help. They've been without power for over 6 weeks already, and it may be months before it comes back.
