On October 24, 1944, during the opening stages of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Commander David McCampbell performed one of the most extraordinary feats in aviation history. As the commander of Air Group 15 aboard the USS Essex, McCampbell and his wingman, Ensign Roy Rushing, intercepted a massive formation of 60 Japanese aircraft. Despite being outnumbered 30-to-1, McCampbell used superior tactics and the performance of his F6F Hellcat to systematically dismantle the enemy force. The Mission Breakdown 9 Victories in 15 Minutes: McCampbell personally shot down nine enemy planes (seven A6M Zeros and two Ki-43 Oscars) in a single sortie, setting a U.S. record that still stands for the most victories in one mission. "Ace in a Day" Twice: This mission made him the only American pilot to achieve "ace in a day" status twice (having previously shot down seven planes on June 19, 1944).
