I arrived in Cairns aboard the Spirit of Queensland train from Brisbane, I'd allowed an extra day in my schedule because I didn't want to be late for the Savannahlander experience I'd booked. Not wanting to waste my spare day I decided to catch the Kuranda Scenic Railway train. Today's Kuranda Scenic Railway was originally constructed to serve the mines, industries and agricultural centers located on the Atherton Tableland and beyond. A network of branch lines once serve the various industrial customers and passenger trains operated to Ravenshoe, Forsayth and Chillagoe. Only the line to Forsayth remains in use today as many of the industries closed and lorries became more competitive as they benefited from road improvements enabling them to attract the few remaining customers away from the railway, only the Cairns to Kuranda section of the original line remains busy today carrying tourists from the coastal resort town of Cairns to the tourist village at Kuranda. Constructed in 1891, the line climbs the Great Dividing Range to reach Kuranda located on the Atherton Tableland. The 37 km route passes through the Macalister Range, as well as the suburbs of Stratford, Freshwater and Redlynch with the main highlights of the journey being Stoney Creek viaduct and Barron Falls where the train stops to allow passengers to admire the cascading water from the station's viewing platforms. Passengers join the train again at Barron Falls for the remaining few kilometres through lash rain forest to the attractive station serving Kuranda. Train services operate every day of the year except Christmas Day. A one-way trip takes approximately 1 Hour 55 minutes. The only other trains operating over the line are occasional maintenance trains and the weekly Savannahlander service to Forsayth.
