US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Indian rice. The issue came up during a White House roundtable with US farmers, lawmakers and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. During the meeting, he also announced a 12-billion-dollar aid package for the farm sector. Reacting to complaints raised by farmers about "dumping", Trump apparently turned to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and asked, "India, tell me about India. Why is India allowed to do that? They have to pay tariffs. Do they have an exemption on rice?" He said, "They shouldn’t be dumping. I mean, I heard that, I heard that from others. You can’t do that." Dumping is a trading term, which means goods are being sold below the market rate. Trump then offered what he called an "easy" solution. "Tariffs, again. It solves the problem in two minutes," he added. It is to be noted that India is the world's largest rice producer, growing around 150 million tonnes a year. Most of it is consumed domestically, but India still exports about 23 million tonnes of rice to 172 countries. That makes India the biggest rice exporter in the world.
