About

Florian Gadsby is a ceramicist working with stoneware and porcelain in North London — here you'll find videos that show process, how pottery is thrown and finished and finally glazed and kiln fired. The videos here show the processes behind his work, such as the throwing and trimming of tableware and more sculptural pieces. For more regular posts, including daily photographs and videos, make sure to follow over on my Instagram: (www.instagram.com/floriangadsby). I restock my online shop around 3/4 times a year, with about 300-400 pieces a time, if you'd like to receive a newsletter about when these go live you can sign up to my newsletter on my website, (https://www.floriangadsby.com/newsletter). I also leave the shop page online, even though it appears as sold out, it usually sells out in a few minutes time, just to give you an idea of what's available and the price range, (https://www.floriangadsby.com/shop). Video Description

I hope to have a new year full of making. It’s been a while since I’ve done any proper throwing and I’m dying to get back into the usual swing of things—when I haven’t thrown in a while I feel as if something intrinsic to my day-to-day life has been gone missing. Earlier last week I threw a batch of these stepped bowls, pots made with tall feet and pulled up as a thickish cylinder initially, as once tall enough the rim is stretched out wider and wider. This means that if you were to start off with a very thin, weedy lip, as it’s stretched out it would simply split and crack, which isn’t ideal. Instead, it’s left sturdy, which also helps to stabilise the bowl as its shaped, the overhanging walls angled out further and further. The extra clay also makes throwing the ledge in the lip somewhat more straightforward, in fact, it’s left thick even after finishing it at this stage, as this means when it’s leather hard, I’ll be able to trim it to my exacting likeness. More of that in my next video. #wheelthrownpottery #clay #stoneware #pottery #ceramics #satisfying
